Wordle hints (game #814) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has vowels in two places*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #814) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is O.
Vowels are generally less common than you’d expect at the start of a word, and O is only the 17th most likely letter to begin a Wordle answer.
Wordle hints (game #814) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
Wordle hints (game #814) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is R.
R is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – it’s actually the 4th most common there, behind E, Y and T.
Wordle hints (game #814) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #814)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #814) is… OLDER.
Another week, another Wordle – and this one has more than a hint of familiarity about it. Perhaps that’s because it has a pretty standard format, with two vowels nestled around three common consonants to form our old favorite, an ER Wordle. Or maybe it’s because OLDER is such a common word. Either way, there’s nothing particularly notable about it. In fact, its average score, according to WordleBot, is a right-in-the-middle-of-the-range 4.0.
I solved it in 3/6 – unusually for me with ER words – but that had very little to do with my first guess and almost everything to do with my second.
As always, I started with STARE, which is one of the best Wordle starting words, albeit not one of WordleBot’s absolute favorites. That gave me a yellow E and yellow R, and left me with 181 possible solutions. SLATE, WordleBot’s top choice, cut the numbers down to just 20, while AUDIO (the second most popular starter word) was even more successful and left players with a mere 18.
But I had a secret weapon to deploy on my second guess: the word LINED. This has worked very well for me before on ER words, because although it couldn’t be the answer it tends to confirm either the ER pattern or an ED one, as well as including several other common letters.
Today, it gave me a yellow L, yellow D and green E – which together were enough to convince me that this was indeed an ER word. What’s more, it only left two possible solutions, ELDER and OLDER.
Either was equally likely, but I decided to go with OLDER as it didn’t repeat any letters and guessed correctly again. I’m sure my luck will end soon, but for now I’ll take it.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #813)
In a different time zone where it’s still Sunday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #813, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in three places.
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was Q.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.
- Yesterday’s Wordle answer means to repeat what has been said or written.
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #813)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #813) was… QUOTE.
At first glance you might expected this to have been a tough Wordle, given the presence of a Q at the start – but you’d be wrong. WordleBot says the average score for this game is just 3.5, which actually makes it the easiest in more than a week.
In fact it’s our third relatively easy Wordle puzzle in a row, and my fourth 3/6 in succession. And as with yesterday’s game (see below), I enjoyed a fair bit of luck on my way to that score.
That luck started earlier than it did yesterday, when my opening STARE drew a blank. Today, it gave me a green E and yellow T and immediately reduced my possible solutions list to just 24, according to WordleBot.
That was far from the best result, though, which perhaps explains why even with a Q in it, today’s game was on the more straightforward side of things. Among the best Wordle starting words, for instance, SLATE, CRATE and CARTE all left just 14 options.
My list contained quite a few words that ended —TE, including FLUTE, GLUTE, QUITE, QUOTE, UNITE, WHITE, CHUTE and ELITE. I had a hunch some had been past Wordle answers, but couldn’t remember which and decided not to check. I did have some other words written down, for instance TITLE, THEME, TWICE and TWINE, but decided to go with the —TE format and enjoyed a stroke of fortune. Not only did the T turn green, but the U turned yellow – which considerably narrowed down my possibles.
WordleBot told me afterwards that there were four left, but I only found three: QUOTE, QUITE and UNITE, having missed BUTTE. It didn’t matter, though: it made sense to play one of the two QU words, so I went with QUOTE and guessed correctly for my 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
