Today’s Wordle hints – answer, clues and tips for game #720, Friday, June 9

It’s time for your daily round of Wordle hints, expertly crafted to help you keep your streak going even on the toughest of days.

You might think that you don’t need any clues for Wordle today, but remember: failure in this game is only ever six guesses away.

Below, you’ll find a selection of Wordle hints to guide you in the right direction. You don’t have to use them all, but there are five in total should you need them, covering vowels, starting letter, ending letter and more. And if you don’t have time to play at all, you can see the answer, too.

Want more word-based fun? My Quordle today page contains hints and answers for that game, which remains the best of all the main Wordle alternatives.

SPOILER WARNING: Wordle hints and today’s answer are below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to see them.

Wordle hints (game #720) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #720) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is B.

B is a very, very common starting letter in Wordle. In fact, it’s the third most common overall, behind only S and C.

Wordle hints (game #720) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There is one repeated letter in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #720) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is A.

A is a relatively common ending letter. It ranks 10th in this regard and today’s game is one of 63 in which you’ll find an A there.

Wordle hints (game #720) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #720) is… BALSA.

This is a model (pun intended) Wordle answer: it has a repeated letter, an S where you might not expect it and is not the most obvious word in the dictionary. It’s moderately difficult (WordleBot gives it an average score of 4.4) but not the kind of word that will necessarily lead to too many lost streaks, because it doesn’t have multiple answers that are spelled similarly. It’s a good test of your mettle, and not horribly reliant on luck. I like it!

All of the letters in BALSA are common in the game; B is the third most likely letter to start a Wordle answer, after S and C, while A is the second most frequently used overall. L and S are both in the top 10 letters list (6th and 8th respectively), but S is found a lot less often outside of the opening slot, so that might have tripped you up a little today.

The repeated A may have proved tricky, too – it’s common among repeats (it ranks 4th in this regard), but still uncommon compared to getting just a single A. There’s plenty to keep you on your toes, here.

You will have found the challenge a lot easier if you used certain of the best Wordle starting words; if you didn’t use one, or you went with something popular but not actually that good (ie ADIEU), you’ll have found it harder.

For instance, SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite starter, left just seven possible solutions. Wow! SLANT (11) and my pick, STARE (22), were also pretty good. LEAST left just three! But ADIEU? Well, that was at 352. Good luck narrowing all those down.

Yes, I’m being harsh on the use of ADIEU, but come on. Either use a good start word or don’t use one at all. Wordle is possible more fun without one; it’s certainly more challenging and has more variety. Picking a good one gives you a better chance of a good score. Picking ADIEU – or worse still, AUDIO or OUIJA, is the worst of both worlds, removing the unpredictability but without improving your chances very much. Rant over.

Right, so what happened to me today? I got lucky, that’s what. STARE left me just 22 options, but I only found about half of them: AMISS, NASAL, LASSO, BALSA, USUAL, GASSY, BASIC, BASIS, ALIAS and BASIL.

I decided to go with NASAL because I wanted to include two As; I didn’t necessarily think the answer would have two As, but it would help me to find out which position it was in. This is something I’ve seen WordleBot do a few times, although today the ‘bot preferred BASIL as the second guess.

It turned out either would have worked. NASAL gave me a green A, a yellow second A and a yellow L to go with the already-yellow S. And, it transpired, it left me with just one answer. That was BALSA and I played that next for a 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #719)

In a different time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #719, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had one vowel.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was C.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #719)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #719) was… CRUMB.

We’ve had a lot of difficult Wordles recently, but today’s puzzle doesn’t count among them. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.7, so not too bad, and I don’t expect many people will lose their streak today.

That’s mostly down to lack of solutions to pick from – very few words have that MB combination at the end. The CR at the start is a lot more common – in fact it’s the third most common start combo of all, turning up 45 times across Wordle’s 2,309 original answers (compared to just four solutions that end with MB).

Some of the best Wordle starting words may have helped today too. Specifically, CRANE left just 13 possible solutions, CRATE 14 and TRACE also 13. My pick, STARE, was at a far higher 123 though, so I had work to do for my second guess.

Fortunately, my choice of CRONY was very lucky, giving me a green C and turning the R green too, while narrowing down those options to just four. These were CRUMB, CRIMP, CRICK and CRUMP, according to WordleBot, but truthfully I only thought of the first three myself.

Still, I was confident that I could have a guess at it already, with no need to further narrow things down. CRUMB seemed by far the most likely of those words to be an actual Wordle solution and it duly gave me a 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
