Amazon devices are super cheap

Amazon has slashed the prices on many of its own devices, just as it does every year. That means you can pick up everything from an Echo Dot to a Fire Tablet to a Kindle for a lot less than usual.

The best deals include an Echo Dot (4th Gen) for £19.99, a Fire TV Stick for £22.99, a Fire Tablet 7 for £31.99 and a Kindle Paperwhite for £94.99

Some of these devices have been cheaper before, but not by much and it’s worth noting that both the Fire 7 and Paperwhite are now at their cheapest prices ever

Amazon Smart Plug: was £24.99 now £12.99 at Amazon
Even if you don’t have a house full of smart devices, this handy little gadget from Amazon can add smart capabilities to attached tech such as timers, schedules and voice controls. It also works great with other Alexa devices such as the Echo Dot or Echo Show. Now half-price – it’s a super useful and cheap addition to your shopping cart.View Deal

Echo Dot (4th Gen): was £49.99 now £19.99 at Amazon
Amazon’s previous generation Echo Dot smart speaker is back on sale with a £30 saving – that makes it the cheapest we’ve seen it. In our Echo Dot review, we found it to be reasonably loud and a cheap way to get some smart home tech. You can use it to control your smart home setup, as well as play music, check the weather, set timers, and more, all with simple voice commands.View Deal

Echo Dot (5th Gen): was £54.99 now £26.99 at Amazon
The latest generation Echo Dot smart speaker offers a step up in audio quality to deliver clearer vocals, more powerful bass and a more vibrant sound overall. Apart from that, it’s capable of exactly the same features as previous models, so it’s up to you whether it’s worth paying the extra £7. It is the first time the brand-new Echo Dot has been on sale since launch, though, so it’s a rare deal.View Deal

The cheaper wired version of the Ring Video Doorbell is even more affordable now it’s back down to its lowest price ever for Black Friday. Ring Video Doorbell 3: was £159.99 now £109.99 at Amazon
This upgraded version of the Ring Video Doorbell comes with improved wireless connectivity and better motion detection – but otherwise is the same as the standard wireless version. This is Amazon’s cheapest and most basic streaming stick. It’s capable of streaming your favourite content in full HD through all the major streaming apps with voice controls but is not able to control your connected TV or soundbar. This more premium version of Amazon’s streaming stick is 40% more powerful than the standard 4K version. Get the excellent Nest Mini smart speaker for just £20

Alex Whitelock, Deals Editor, TechRadar

The official Google Store launched its Black Fridays sale in the UK last week, and it’s offering up the fantastic Nest Mini smart speaker for just £20.

This is the lowest price yet for the budget smart speaker, and a deal that’s well under half-price – considering it usually retails for £49. Overall, while we’re quite in the loose-change pocket money range here, we’re definitely in bargain territory, especially if you’re looking for a smart home-related gift.

At £20, this is a fairly cheap way to kick-start your smart home setup. You could, for example, purchase a couple of devices and place them throughout your house, making use of the myriad Google Assistant voice functions to control your lights, TV, or other smart-compatible devices.

Where and why did Black Friday start?

Black Friday feels like it’s been around forever. But where it did all start? And where did that name come from?

Well, the first known mention of Black Friday related to this shopping experience was in November 1951, when the journal Factory Management and Maintenance used it to describe people calling in sick the day after Thanksgiving so they could have an extra day off work.

Around this time, police in the US were using the phrases “Black Friday” and “Black Saturday” to describe the horrendous traffic that occurred at the beginning of the pre-Christmas shopping season.

It wasn’t until 1961 that there was a movement from the local government to change the shopping season to “Big Friday” and “Big Saturday”. Clearly, that never caught on.

It wasn’t until much later that the notion that Black Friday was the time when retailers moved ‘back into the black’ became the leading thought and it was clearly an attempt to bring positivity to the term.

Oculus Quest 2 is cheaper – but could drop again

Meta’s Black Friday deals have gone live and there are some decent prices on the VR headset, which we gave 4.5/5 stars in our Oculus Quest 2 review. The discounts don’t quite bring the headset back down to the lowest price we’ve ever seen (£299 in August), but the added games are good value.

Oculus Quest 2 (128 GB) Black Friday bundle: was £452.99 now £349.99 at Amazon
In our four-and-a-half-star review, we celebrated the Oculus Quest 2’s easy to use design, as well as its good visuals and specs (especially for its price). This deal doesn’t make it as cheap as it used to be (£299 before a price hike) but it’s still an amazing bundle offer that includes a lot of bang for your buck.View Deal

Oculus Quest 2 (256 GB) Black Friday bundle: was $552.99 now £429.99 at Amazon
This version of the Oculus Quest 2 bundle includes the same great games and VR headset, except it comes with more storage (256GB instead of 128GB). Admittedly, you don’t need this much space unless you plan to download a lot (and we really mean a lot) of VR games, but if you want to go all-in on the metaverse this bundle could be perfect for you.View Deal

The Oculus Quest 2 is one of the best VR headsets around, especially if you’re on a budget. While it’s not as impressive as the Valve Index in terms of specs, or normally as cheap as the Pico 4, Meta’s device has more than a few things going for it.

First, unlike the Index, Meta’s headset is standalone. If you want to connect it to a PC you can but to play a VR game you don’t have to. You also don’t need to set up any annoying towers in the real world either, you just have to clear a space and draw a quick outline once you put the headset on so it knows where is safe and you’re ready to go.

Secondly, while the Pico 4 is normally slightly cheaper at £379 (it’s only available in the UK) and comes with slightly better specs, its software is definitely inferior right now. Generally, the Pico OS doesn’t feel as fine-tuned as what Meta’s hardware runs on and the games on the Pico 4 aren’t as good as those on the Quest platform. Not only does it lack great titles like Beat Saber and Resident Evil 4 VR, but the Pico 4’s version of games like After the Fall and Walkabout Mini Golf lack content that’s available on the rival hardware.

Need batteries?

This 12-pack of Duracell AA batteries is an Amazon best-seller today. But they cost £7.13 at Amazon (down from £14.50) – whereas we’ve found them at Argos for £4.90 today.

You’ll probably have to collect them, mind, if you get them at Argos – and not all stores have them in stock – but if you’re looking to save money, it’s a cracking price and worth seeing if they’re available near you.

(Or you can just buy them at Amazon for £7.13 – which is still cheaper than Tesco – and have them delivered.)

But come Christmas, you’ll be grateful that you picked up this 12-pack of Duracell Plus AAs, and for half the price we’re seeing at other retailers. View Deal

Duracell Plus AA Alkaline Batteries, 12-pack: was £14.50 now £7.50 at Amazon
If the Argos deal isn’t working for you, Amazon has the next best price today: £7.50 (they’re £8 at Tesco if you have a clubcard). That’s about 50p more than we’ve seen them drop to before (in May), but inflation has kicked in since then so we’re not sure whether they’ll drop again. You can save even more on larger packs, too. View Deal

Black Friday deals – are they legit?

James Pickard, Deals Editor, TechRadar

I’ve been covering Black Friday for a number of years now, and one of the big points of debate each time is whether the deals during the sale are really as good as they seem. Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer.

In a lot of cases, there are some genuinely good Black Friday deals now, including many big and popular products that have dropped to their lowest prices of the year. I use various price-tracking apps to monitor these top sellers, and track many manually too, and that means I can say with almost 100% certainty whether a specific item has been cheaper before.

However, there are definitely times when a bit of retailer trickery leads to some less-than-stellar deals. As with any sales event, you’ll see a mixture of bargains, discounted end-of-line stock and strange things found in the back of a warehouse somewhere. Sometimes, you have to sift through that to uncover the gems.

But that’s also why we’re here. Now that Black Friday’s in full swing, it’s important to know that we’ve carefully considered the deals we’re sharing based on product quality, price history and how interesting we think they’ll be to you. It’s something we do all year-round anyway to bring you the top bargains.

Black Friday TV deals: quick links

7 of the best Black Friday deals on TVs

1. TCL 32S5209 32-inch HDR TV: was £199 now £149 at Amazon
Lots of 32-inch TVs have to do without the tech that makes bigger TVs great, but not this one. You get Android smart TV and HDR support, so it’s easy to find things to watch, and they look better once you do. With these specs, £150 is a very competitive price – the 25% discount is about as good as it gets for TVs this cheap, anyway.View Deal

2. Hisense A6BG 50-inch 4K LED TV: was £499 now £299 at Amazon
Few other brands can compete with Hisense when it comes to balancing budget with features and functionality. This 2022 50-inch 4K TV comes with Dolby Vision HDR for you to enjoy Netflix and Disney Plus movies at their best, all from and an intuitive smart TV interface. The fact that 50 inches worth of TV is less than £300 is an incredible early Black Friday deal.  View Deal

3. Hisense 65-inch A6BG series 4K TV: was £799 now £448 at Amazon
A £300 price cut makes this Hisense 4K TV a good deal indeed for anyone looking to step up to the 65-inch size range on the cheap. Along with 4K resolution, it offers Dolby Vision HDR and DTS Virtual:X sound for a more immersive experience. Built-in Alexa will let you control the TV using voice commands and there’s also Hisense’s own VIDAA smart interface onboard for streaming.View Deal

4. LG A2 65-inch OLED 4K TV: was £1,699 now £1,299 at Currys
This is the cheapest 65-inch OLED available, so if you want the rich cinematic contrast of this premium screen tech for less, the A2 is ideal. To make it this price, it features less advanced processing than the LG C2, a less bright screen, and no HDMI 2.1 ports for next-gen gaming. But the precise colours and rich HDR are here – for movie lovers looking for high-end pictures for a mid-range price, it’s excellent.View Deal

NOW OUT OF STOCK
TCL 65C635K 65-inch QLED Television
was £699 now £549 at Amazon
If you’re looking for a widescreen Smart TV purchase that won’t break the bank, this deal is the one for you. It only offers a 21% discount, which doesn’t seem like much – and it might come down further in price as Black Friday approaches. Even so, with 4K HDR resolution, QLED Quantum dot color, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HDMI support, built-in Free View, and Android TV containing all of your favorite streaming services, you’ll do well to find a better TV deal right now. View Deal

5. Samsung BU8000 75-inch 4K TV: was £1,399 now £999 at Amazon
A 75-inch TV for under £1000? What’s not to love. The Samsung BU8000 obviously doesn’t have quite the vibrancy of Samsung higher-priced QLED TVs, but this is an exceptionally fair trade off for this much TV real estate for less than a grand – especially as Samsung delivers some of the best budget bang for buck around. The BU8000 has solid upscaling and virtual 3D surround sound. There’s no HDMI 2.1 for new-gen gaming but ALLM is on hand to help with ultra low lag.View Deal

6. LG 55-inch CS series 4K OLED TV: was £1,499 now £949.00 at Amazon
At just £949, this is a great Amazon Black Friday deal on LG’s CS series OLED TV, which is basically the LG C2 but with the panel and design of LG C1. The set sports the company’s latest a9 Gen 5 AI Processor, and it has support for Dolby Vision IQ HDR and Dolby Atmos sound. With a native 120Hz display, it’s also a great option for gaming, and LG packs in VRR, ALLM, G-SYNC, and AMD FreeSync Premium to round out the set’s gamer-friendly features.View Deal

7. Philips PUS807 50-inch LED 4K HDR TV : was £679 now £549 at Currys
If you’ve always had an eye on the bright LEDs of Philips’ Ambilight system, this 50-inch LED TV might be right up your colour-changing street. For just over £500 you’re getting 3 sides of Ambilight that will match the action on screen, and just like most Philips TVs you can make the most of every HDR format for all of your streaming services, including Dolby Vision and HDR10+. There are even two HDMI 2.1 ports for new-gen gaming at 120Hz – that’s incredibly rare at this price.

8. LG 55-inch QNED816 4K TV: was £1,149 now £699 at Amazon
A 39% price cut on this LG 55-inch QNED TV gives gamers an opportunity to scoop up a cheap but great TV to use with their PS5. QNED is LG’s way of saying the set has quantum dots for enhanced colour, and it also supports 4K 120Hz video input and VRR. LG’s webOS platform provides the streaming smarts, and you can also control the TV via Google Assistant and Alexa voice commands.View Deal

9. LG C2 48-inch OLED TV: was £1,399 now £949 at Amazon
The world’s best TV for most people (according to our review) hits its cheapest-ever price for one day thanks to an extra £100 off voucher, but now it’s back to £949. We don’t know whether that price will return, but this is the best we’ve seen for it otherwise. It’s a wonderful OLED TV, and is totally future-proofed, thanks to its great smart TV software and four advanced HDMI 2.1 port.View Deal

When does Black Friday start?

It’s late November and there are Black Friday 2022 ads everywhere. But when does Black Friday actually start? Is it already running?

Black Friday doesn’t officially start until November 25 – this coming Friday. But in many ways Black Friday has started. There’s a huge influx of Black Friday deals already, and the annual sales event is in full swing at most major retailers.

It’s fair to say that we’re now deep into peak discount season. The best deals of the year used to appear on Black Friday itself, but that’s now no longer the case. Last year, most of the biggest offers launched in the seven days leading up to Black Friday – and then remained relatively static as we moved through Black Friday weekend into Cyber Monday

In fact, there were very few new deals in many of the largest product categories on either Black Friday or Cyber Monday last year – and some of the best offers from earlier in the month didn’t return. That’s a trend we expect to see again this year.

From today, then, our advice is to keep your eyes peeled. We’re seeing some serious Black Friday deals now – so if you see a great saving on a product you’ve had your eye on in the coming days, we recommed grabbing it.
