B is a very, very common starting letter in Wordle. In fact, it’s the third most common overall, behind only S and C.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #779)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #779) is… BROOK.
OK, I can stop complaining about Wordle being too easy now, because yesterday’s 4.3 has been followed up with a puzzle that rates an average score of 4.7, according to WordleBot, and that makes it the toughest one we’ve had since FOLLY nearly a month ago (game #751). Hurrah!
I could only score a 5/6 on it, but I don’t mind, because there wasn’t much more I could have done; WordleBot told me afterwards that my skill score was 97/99 but my luck score just 21, so frankly it’s just one of those things.
I imagine quite a few people might lose their streaks today, because BROOK is one of those words. You know, the kind with… wait for it… too many answers! Is it BROOM? Is it BROOD? Is it BROWN or CROWN or GROOM or CROOK? Depending on the way your game developed, all would have made sense as guesses at some stage.
The double-O doesn’t help matters, of course, but really it’s the multiple options that are the big problem here. That’s backed up by the results for the best Wordle starting words, with SLATE leaving 309 possible solutions, SLANT 531 and STARE at 123. TRACE and CRATE, at 60, were better – but not by enough that it would ever have been easy to solve.
I followed my single-yellow-R opener with CRONY, which has worked well for me in this scenario today. Today was another example: green R, green O and the possibles list reduced to 16.
According to WordleBot, those 16 included the likes of PROOF, GROOM, GROUP, PROUD, PROWL, DROOP, DROID, BROOM, BROIL, BROOD and BROOK – all words that I also came up. I did miss a few, including PROMO, DROLL and VROOM – though I’m a little dubious as to whether the latter is really a possible answer.
Anyway, looking at my own list I decided to play a narrowing-down word, namely PLUMB. WordleBot liked that, and said it’s exactly what it would have done too. This only gave me a yellow B, but coupled with removing the P, L, U and M, it left me with just two answers: BROOK and BROOD.
So, I had a 50/50, meaning there was no way I could lose now. I wanted a 4/6 of course, but didn’t get one: I went with BROOD and got it wrong, leaving me to play BROOK next time out for a WordleBot-equaling 5/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #778)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #778)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #778) was… POLYP.
Finally, the NYT sees fit to give us a difficult Wordle solution – or it was randomly time for one. It doesn’t matter which, but it’s undoubtedly a nice change after so many vanilla Wordles in the past two weeks.
POLYP is anything but vanilla. In fact, it ticks several of the Wordle boxes marked ‘complication’. For instance, it has a repeated letter, a factor which immediately makes any answer more difficult to find.
What’s more, the repeated letter is P – a letter that only appears twice in 18 out of the game’s original 2,309 solutions. It also has a Y that’s not at the end of the answer. This is generally uncommon – 364 of the 424 games in which Y appears see it in that final slot. But even more uncommonly, only three of those 424 games see Y appear in position #4, as it does today.
And then of course there’s the fact that POLYP is not a commonly used word at all. It can mean a couple of things – an animal form such as a coral or sea anemone, or a growth, typically around the nose or throat – but neither is exactly an everyday usage.
Put all that together and you have an answer that warrants an average score of 4.3, making it far harder than a standard Wordle.
Nor is it one that the best Wordle starting words helped much with. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left 106 possible solutions and that was the best out of the popular choices. STARE, my choice, drew a blank and left me 319 possibles.
As always when my first guess fails to turn up any letters, I followed up with CLOUD. That worked reasonably well: it gave me a yellow O and yellow L and reduced my answer pool to 21 options. That was still too many, but I recalled another recent(ish) game, FOLLY (game #751), and knew that an LY ending was the most likely: that gave me the likes of LOLLY, GOLLY, HOLLY, MOLLY, JOLLY, NOBLY, LOWLY and JOWLY.
With that in mind, I played JOWLY – which WordleBot didn’t like very much. It would have preferred FOLLY, because that would apparently have done a better job of reducing the options. Maybe so, but I knew FOLLY had been an answer, whereas I don’t think JOWLY has. So my guess made some sense.
It didn’t matter – neither FOLLY or JOWLY were right, but both left just one possible answer: POLYP. It took me an age to find it, though – I eventually resorted to writing down all of the possible combinations (YOL–, YO–L, OYL– and so on), before eventually realizing that -OLY- made a word if I added a P at either end. I did that and scored a satisfactory 4/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
