Wordle hints (game #766) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has vowels in two places*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #766) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is W.
W is a fairly average letter when it comes to starting an answer. There are 82 solutions that begin with a W, with means that it ranks 13th – so right in the middle of the alphabet.
Wordle hints (game #766) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There is one repeated letter in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
Wordle hints (game #766) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is L.
L is a really common letter to find at the end of a Wordle. There are 155 games that finish with an L, and it ranks as the fifth most likely letter there.
Wordle hints (game #766) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #766)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #766) is… WHEEL.
That’s two games in a row with a repeated letter and two games in a row containing an H, but otherwise this is a very different beast from yesterday’s HOBBY. Where that had an average score of 4.5, according to WordleBot, this comes in at just 3.9. Some of that is no doubt due to the fact that E is by a distance the most likely letter to be repeated in a Wordle answer; it occurs in 172 games, compared to 81 for O, the second most likely repeat.
It’s also probably because there aren’t that many other words that have a similar format. Where the -O–Y structure is pretty common, the –E-L one is less so – so if, like me, you got those two letters early on, you’ll soon have worked out that there are a fairly small pool of answers to pick from.
Once again, none of the best Wordle starting words were very helpful; SLATE left 95 possible solutions and that was about as good as it got. STARE gave me a single yellow E and merely narrowed down my choices to 249. Wow! But fortunately my second guess, BLEND, did a lot of hard work and reduced that to just five.
Did I find those five? No. I came up with four: WHELP, WHELK, WHELM and QUELL. However, WordleBot only considered two of those, WHELP and QUELL, to be viable choices, instead adding in WHEEL, LEECH and KVELL. That’s a pretty poor effort by me, there…
If I had spotted WHEEL then I’m pretty sure I would have played that, but no matter. I didn’t, so I played WHELP and on the plus side it gave me the WH opening that led me directly to the answer. So, another 4/6 for me today – that’s my sixth in a row, which might well be a record for me. Clearly I need to step up my game tomorrow.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #765)
In a different time zone where it’s still Monday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #765, too.
- Wordle yesterday had a vowel in one place.
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was H.
- There was one repeated letter in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was Y.
- Yesterday’s Wordle answer is an amateur interest.
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #765)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #765) was… HOBBY.
We’re in something of a difficult run in Wordle right now. Only two of the past seven games have dipped below an average of 4, according to WordleBot, and today’s HOBBY is a way above that, coming in at 4.5.
It has all the hallmarks of a tricky answer: repeated letter, slightly less common starting letter and lots of other possible solutions that have a similar format.
The repeated letter, as is usually the case, is the most notable aspect. B is not a common letter to be repeated – only 13 Wordle words out of the original 2,309 solutions contain a repeated B; only eight contain two Bs together.
In fact, B is not all that common in general. Sure, it’s the third likeliest letter to start an answer, after S and C, but very few Bs appear elsewhere, to the extent that it’s just 18th in the hierarchy overall. H is more common in general (14th), but it’s hardly a regular visitor to Wordle answers.
To make matters worse, none of the best Wordle starting word were any help at all today. None of them. SLATE left 309 possible solutions, TRACE was at 345, SLANT at 531, CRANE at 358… Useless, all of them.
My STARE drew a blank, which meant I had 319 possible answers left. My second word, CLOUD, wasn’t much more helpful, giving me a single yellow O and nothing more. Unknown to me, it had done a lot of heavy lifting in the background though, and I now had just 22 answers to sift through.
Rather than start guessing – which seemed a tad unwise with only one yellow letter to play – I opted to play a word designed to eliminate (or uncover) some more of the most common letters. I went with NYPMH, because many of the words I’d written down – BOGGY, HOBBY, MOMMY, BONNY, POPPY, WONKY – had three consonants and a Y, with no other vowels. NYMPH enabled me to get the Y in while also packing the word with consonants, and without wasting any letters on something I’d already played.
It was a risk, but a calculated one, and it paid off. WordleBot didn’t like it (it preferred BONGO), but it gave me a yellow H and Y to go with the O.
Moreover, it left me with just one possible answer: HOBBY, which I played next for a WordleBot-equaling 4/6 on another tricky day.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
