T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #739)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #739) is… TRACT.
You want to know how much of a Wordle nerd I am? Really? OK, here goes: on seeing that today’s answer ends in a T, and noting that yesterday’s answer also ended in a T, as did the day before’s… well, I had to know when the last time that happened was. So, I can reveal that we haven’t had three consecutive answers ending in the same letter since October 2022, when BOUGH, MARSH and SLOTH were the answers to games #472-474.
What’s more, it’s only happened three other times: November 2021 (TILDE, STORE and PROVE), October 2021 (SPICY, SPRAY, ESSAY) and August 2021 (BELLY, IVORY, SEEDY).

TRACT is notable for another reason, of course, in that it both starts and ends with the same letter. And, yes, I also had to find out when else that has happened. My Google Sheets formula skills really got a good workout today.
So anyway, the last time when we had a repeat at the start and end of a Wordle answer was with KAYAK in April of this year (a palindromic Wordle, no less), and before that it’s happened with RIPER, KIOSK, ELUDE and BLURB earlier in 2023, and a further 27 times in the 18 months before that.

On with the show. TRACT is a good Wordle – an 8/10 Wordle. It presents a challenge, on account of that repeated letter and the fact that it’s not a particularly obvious word. It doesn’t have any uncommon letters, and it’s not incredibly difficult, but it sits nicely in the middle. WordleBot says it has an average score of 4.0, which is, well, average.
In terms of the best Wordle starting words today, my pick (STARE) fared well, leaving just 12 possible solutions. SLATE (24) and SLANT (15) were a little higher – but CRANE (4), TRACE (2), CARTE (3) and CRATE (2) were all much, much better. CARET left just one!
ADIEU and AUDIO, in contrast, were not helpful at all – they left a whopping 352 and 529 possible solutions respectively! This is not a major shock, because they really aren’t great choices as far as start words go. Sure, they get lucky sometimes, but more often they don’t. I’ve said all this before.
Despite being in a far better position than that myself, I still needed another three guesses to hit the jackpot. My first, GLINT, couldn’t have been correct, but was chosen so as to include three other common consonants in G, L and N which between them featured in five of those 12 possible solutions (TRAWL, GRAFT, GRANT, TRAIN and TRAIL). The I, meanwhile, was in there to cover off TRAIT.
At first glance it looked like I’d been unlucky – only the T changed color – but as it happened I’d narrowed it down to just three words now, CRAFT, DRAFT and TRACT. Choosing one of the -RAFT words made sense to guarantee I’d score no worse than a 4/6, so I went for CRAFT. And when that gave me a yellow C, I knew the answer had to be TRACT.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #738)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #738)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #738) was… ABOUT.
This is about as easy as Wordle ever gets. WordleBot, the NYT’s ever-helpful AI tool, says people are solving it in an average of 3.5 guesses, and there’s really nothing to be concerned about here. Four of the five letters are common, with B the outlier; it’s only the 18th most frequently used letter in the game. But with three vowels and a T to also uncover, this shouldn’t have proved too tricky.
None of the best Wordle starting words were particularly helpful today – SLANT left 30, which was the best of the top choices – but the two most popular picks were incredibly successful. These are ADIEU (11) and AUDIO (3), and I separate them from the best options because there is a difference. ADIEU and AUDIO are not, typically, as helpful as the likes of SLATE and CRANE, but occasionally of course they do come up trumps – and today was one of those days.
My pick, STARE, fared nowhere near as well – it gave me a yellow A and yellow T, and left me with 87 possible solutions. No matter. I knew that the T was very likely at the end of the answer, and that the A was most common in the second slot, so I built my second guess around that. PAINT fit the bill nicely, not least because it also included another vowel, in the form of I.
This confirmed the location of the T, but not the A, which could still go at the start or the end of the answer. There aren’t many words that end AT, but those that were still open to me included FLOAT, BLOAT and GLOAT – so getting an O in there made sense.
There were more answers that began with an A, though: ABBOT, ABOUT, AFOOT, ADULT and ALOFT were the ones I found; WordleBot told me afterwards that I could also have gone for ALLOT.
Looking at that list, going for a word with an L in would have made sense – ALOFT, maybe, as that also had an O. But B also featured three times (in ABOUT, ABBOT and BLOAT), so I went with that instead and chose the most common word in the list: ABOUT.
And, lo and behold, I guessed correctly – a 1/10 chance and a welcome 3/6 that owed quite a lot to luck.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
