Invincible season 2 is almost here, ladies and gentlemen. The incredibly popular animated superhero series is back on our screens in early November, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for Mark Grayson this time around.

We’ve been big fans of Invincible since the first comics were released in January 2003, and the R-rated franchise has only gone from strength to strength since it was adapted into one of the best Prime Video shows ever made. Unsurprisingly, then, we can’t contain our excitement for its second season to arrive.

Before it makes landfall on Prime Video, you’ll need to swat up on its next instalment. Below, we’ve put together a handy guide on all things Invincible season 2, including its two release dates (yes, you read that right), trailers, and confirmed cast members. We’ve also provided a recap of season 1’s biggest storylines in our plot section alongside where we think season 2’s story might go, based on what we know from the comic books.

Full spoilers follow for Invincible season 1. Potential spoilers for Invincible‘s second season and the graphic novels, which were created by Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, and Cory Walker, are also discussed.

Invincible season 2 release date

Invincible season 2 will make its Prime Video debut on Friday, November 3. That official reveal came five months after Amazon revealed it would arrive in late 2023. However, Invincible‘s next season won’t launch in full on that date. The first four episodes will be released weekly until Friday, December 1, with its final four entries set for release in early 2024.

Speaking to Collider, Kirkman revealed why Invincible season 2 – and its sequel, which we’ll elaborate on later – have taken so long to develop: “We’re an hour long animated show, which is very unusual. But we have so many characters and so many settings, even in just one episode, that we’re really kind of pushing the limits of what can be done in animation. So it takes a long time to make it. But it has also taken a long time to learn how to do it and figure it out because we’re doing a lot of things that you don’t necessarily do in animation.”

Invincible seasons 2 and 3 were greenlit in April 2021, so they’ve been a long time coming. However, as showrunner Simon Racioppa told TechRadar in March 2022, the Invincible crew have been “working hard” on them for longer than that, so this has been a painstaking process for all involved.

Thankfully, a new Invincible episode is already available to watch. A special standalone episode, which explores Atom Eve’s origins story and is apparently essential viewing for seasons 2 and 3, can be streamed on Prime Video right now.

Invincible season 2 trailer

Invincible season 2’s full official teaser was released in October, following from a teaser that became available in late July. The trailer seems to give us a big glimpse at the shape of things to come this season. Mark Grayson (aka Invincible) is clearly battling with his feelings and his desire not to become like Omni-Man, and the trailer hints at someone to step into that father-figure void and help: Angstrom Levy, played by Sterling K Brown.

The trailer also makes clear that the idea of the multi-verse is coming to Invincible‘s next season, which gives the show lots of chances to explore what might have been – including a look at a dark world where Mark is some kind of Big Brother-y dictator.

Among the trailers (you can see the teaser below), we see Invincible and the revived Immortal fight one another, snippets of Mark looking shocked or plagued by visions of the forthcoming Viltrumite threat, and plenty of returning faces from season 1. That includes Omni-Man, i.e. Mark’s father, who may not have a huge role in season 2, but his presence will loom large over proceedings.

Doc Seismic’s return was revealed in the second teaser, while Tatiana Maslany (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) voiced Queen Lizard in Atom Eve’s prequel episode. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the latest Walking Dead actor to join Invincible’s ranks, has also been cast in an undisclosed role.

It’s the final two characters who are the most important where season 2 is concerned, though. First, Sterling K. Brown (Black Panther, The People v O.J. Simpson) will voice Angstrom Levy, one of Invincible’s arch nemeses (per ComicBook.com). We’ll explain more about him in our spoiler-filled plot section.

Meanwhile, iconic Transformers voice actor Peter Cullen will reportedly play Thaddeus, the only other individual to betray the Viltrumite Empire. He’s the character who founded the Coalition of Planets in the comics, which Allen the Alien (Invincible’s new bestie) works for.

Other potential returnees may include Fred Tatasciore (Kill Cannon), Clancy Brown (Damien Darkblood), Jeffrey Donovan (Machine Head), Ezra Miller (D.A. Sinclair), and Michael Dorn (Battle Beast and Thokk). Kirkman, who also works on the TV adaptation, has hinted at some of their returns, but we’re unsure which ones will be back.

A more prominent season 1 voice actor slated to return, but hasn’t actually been confirmed by anyone except Kirkman, is Zachary Quinto. He voiced Robot in season 1, i.e. the artificial host body of Rudy Conners, an individual whose genetic defects initially meant he was unable to live outside of his saline tank.

With Rudy’s consciousness being transferred into his new clone body in episode 7, Ross Marquand took over vocal duties for Rudy, so we don’t know if Quinto will be back. Robot plays a huge role in the comic series, but we didn’t know if events involving him will be part of Invincible season 2. In a Polygon interview, though, Kirkman all-but-confirmed Quinto’s Robot is involved this season.

Finally, a bunch of other cast members were revealed as part of season 2’s latest teaser trailer. We don’t know who they’re voicing, but three of them will be playing Giant, Bulletproof, and Shapesmith, based on some season 2 concept art reveals (thanks to Reddit for the catch). Read the list below for more details:

  • Micah Aliling
  • Eric Bauza
  • Chloe Bennet
  • Cleveland Berto
  • Lincoln Bodin
  • Camden Coley
  • Cliff Curtis
  • Rob Delaney
  • Daveed Diggs
  • Calista Flockhart
  • Josh Keaton
  • Phil Lamaar
  • Luke MacFarlane
  • Scoot McNairy
  • Jay Pharoah
  • Ella Purnell
  • Tim Robinson
  • Ben Schwartz
  • Rhea Seehorn
  • Paul F Tompkins
  • Lea Thompson
  • Kari Wahlgren
  • Shantel Vansanten

Invincible season 2 plot speculation

The Immortal prepares to throw a punch at Mark Grayson in Invincible season 2

Major spoilers follow for Invincible season 1 and the graphic novels.

Invincible season 2 could explore various comic book storylines, but it’s likely to draw inspiration from issue 24 onwards. That’s based on Invincible‘s season 1 finale, plus how the overarching narrative and side stories play out in the graphic novels. However, chatting to Polygon, Invincible’s co-creator Robert Kirkman said established fans can’t solely rely on the graphic novels to know where the animated series will go, so there’s every chance it’ll make slight deviations from the source material, just like season did.

Speaking of the first season, let’s discuss the fallout from its finale. Omni-Man was supposed to conquer Earth for the Viltrumite Empire but, when he realized that he couldn’t kill his son Mark and enslave humanity for his bloodthirsty conquering race, he tearfully headed out into space for an unknown destination.

Kirkman has teased that Omni-Man deserting his post will have a “terrifying” impact on Earth and its heroes in season 2, including Mark. He’ll be tasked with keeping Earth safe from the Viltrumites and helping the Coalition of Planets stop the former from carrying out their universe-wide expansion.

Speaking to IGN, Kirkman suggested this newfound responsibility – especially as, due to the fact he’s half-Viltrumite, Mark is the only one powerful enough to replace Omni-Man as Earth’s protector – will weigh heavily on him, adding: “He’s kind of thrust further into this superhero world that he may not quite be prepared for, and there’s no end of conflict that’s boiling on the planet that is coming at him nonstop”. Despite having the literal weight of the world on his shoulders, Kirkman also confirmed Mark would actually start winning fights this season. We know, we were shocked, too!

Anyway, Mark already knows that an invasion fleet is on its way thanks to Allen. With the latter having a more prominent role in the comics moving forward, we can expect the duo’s bromance and power levels to grow in the TV show, too.

We should also find out where Omni-Man/Nolan has gone. In the comics, Nolan invades another planet, which he hopes will act as recompense – with the Viltrumite Empire – for going AWOL. There’s a lot more for the animated series to cover regarding Mark and Nolan’s relationship, which is explored extensively in the source material. We could write multiple paragraphs on this compelling father-son bond so, for now, let’s say we’ll definitely see some of Simmons’ Nolan next season.

But the superhuman spotlight won’t just be shone on Mark, Nolan, and the Viltrumites. Chatting to Entertainment Weekly (EW), Kirkman also claimed Atom Eve will get more screen time and grander character evolution in Invincible season 2. Indeed, her episodic special, which arrived in mid-July, is just scratching the surface of the fan-favorite atomic matter manipulator. “There are a lot of things about Eve’s backstory that are revealed in that episode that are very important to later on in the show,” Kirkman said.

Season 1’s final episode also teased the expansion of subplots throughout its eight-episode arc in its successor.

We should see more of the Sequids storyline, which wasn’t officially concluded. The spaceman who was left behind on Mars is now controlled by the Sequids, which could spell bad news for Earth if this parasitic race charts a course for the blue planet.

Additionally, we know that a Martian has infiltrated Earth after he traded places with one of the human astronauts, although this is likely to be Shapesmith, based on the Reddit character art we mentioned earlier. He’s a superhero in the comics who also joins the Guardians of the Globe, so expect to see Mark net some more allies in season 2. Zandale Randolph’s Bulletproof, another character teased via Reddit, is another of those heroic superpowered individuals, but we’ll refrain from spoiling his important role in the graphic novels for now.

Titan and Battle Beast’s stories may be fleshed out in more detail, too. The last time we saw them, they’d respectively taken over Machine Head’s criminal organization and teleported away from Earth. Their tales continue in the comics, and Kirkman has already alluded to fan favorite Battle Beast getting more screen time. The Flaxans also look like they’ll return, despite Omni-Man’s rampage across their home planet in the show’s second episode.

One interesting piece of news concerns story elements that didn’t make it into Invincible’s comic book run. Speaking to Beyond the Trailer, Kirkman revealed he hoped to include storylines in the show that he couldn’t work into the graphic novels. One subplot concerns Damien Darkblood, who was banished back to Hell by Cecil Stedman in season 1 episode 4. Damien was briefly mentioned in Atom Eve’s prequel episodes, but it’s unclear if this other storyline will be part of season 2.

Meanwhile, Kirkman has revealed more about Invincible season 2’s plot and the inclusion of Mark’s biggest nemesis – Angstrom Levy.

Little is revealed about his backstory in the source material, but Levy’s ability to – without detailing too much – traverse time and space makes him a formidable and recurring foe for Mark to deal with.

Elaborating on how Levy factors into season 2 (per Inverse), Kirkham teased: “Some large or small aspect of season 2 focuses on the Angstrom Levy character. He’ll be a new villain that comes into the series. And if you’ve read the comics, you’re aware of who he is and what his deal is. He’s a villain that has access to multiple dimensions, and so it’s another one of those dang multiverse things. We do things in a different way [than the comics], so there’s a little bit of a unique flavor to what we’re doing.”

Adding to that in his chat with IGN, Kirkman added: “There’s a sympathy for his character that I don’t think is present in the comic… that comes through much more than I expected, and that’s all Sterling [Brown, who voices Angstrom]. What Sterling has been able to wring out of our scripts is something real and vibrant and genuine. A true villain, with a solid core of understanding that makes him as sympathetic and relatable as he is dangerous and terrifying.”

Additionally, based on the impending arrivals of Levy and the Viltrumite fleet, Invincible’s next instalment will enter more cosmic territory. Expect stranger worlds, weirder characters, and a multiverse-spanning plot to feature more heavily next time around. As Kirkman teased to IGN once more: “There was definitely a sense that there was a larger story going on in season 1… and there’s an expanding of the scope that will happen from season to season, and that kind of kicks off with season 2 in a big way”. Color us excited.

How many seasons of Invincible will we get?

At least one more. A third installment was greenlit alongside Invincible season 2 and, according to the official Invincible X account, voice work has been completed for season 2’s successor.

Speaking to IGN, Kirkman also revealed Invincible season 3 is “very far along” and that “this [the period between seasons 1 and 2] is the longest gap anyone will ever have to wait between seasons”. However, when asked by Collider when season 3 will be with us, Kirkman also said “I can’t say”, so it may be a while before another installment is released.

As for what’ll happen post-season 3, there are 144 Invincible comic issues, spanning 20 years of Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ottley’s careers. The TV adaptation altered the order of certain plot points in its first season, but only covered the first 23 issues. If a similar trajectory is maintained for future seasons, Invincible could end around the season 7 or 8 mark. Kirkman has said there could be more or less than that, telling ScreenRant there’s a “rough roadmap for where things from the comics will fall”.

Future seasons depend on whether Invincible continues to draw in audiences in its next two seasons, too – or will it? Speaking to Collider, Seth Rogen seemed to suggest it’ll continue after season 3 regardless. However, Amazon exclusively told TechRadar that “nothing official has been announced”.

On the off-chance that Invincible ends after three seasons, there’s plenty more to be excited about from a franchise standpoint. Omni-Man is set to be a playable DLC character in Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm Games’ iconic (and rebooted) R-rated videogame series. Atom Eve is also getting her own standalone gamesometime in 2023, too. Add in a live-action Invincible film, which is still being worked on despite languishing in development hell for years, and fans will have much more to enjoy outside of the TV series soon enough.
